AZ Alkmaar held to draw by Willem II despite dominant display
AZ Alkmaar's perfect start to the Eredivisie season was interrupted as Willem II fought back for a 1-1 draw at AFAS Stadion in matchday six of the competition. Jordy Clasie put the hosts ahead in the 32nd minute, finishing off a Mexx Meerdink assist to send AZ in front at the break.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Willem II, who had struggled for form coming into the fixture, found an equaliser in the 81st minute through Devin Haen, assisted by Uriel van Aalst, to level the score at 1-1 and deny AZ a sixth straight win. The goal came against the run of play given AZ's control for much of the match.
AZ dominated possession with 67 percent of the ball and produced 22 shots to Willem II's eight, but could not convert their overwhelming territorial advantage into a second goal. The draw leaves AZ top of the table on 16 points from six matches, while Willem II remain in the lower reaches with two points from five.
Jordy Clasie scored the opening goal and finished with a match-high rating of 8.2, driving AZ's first-half dominance.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave AZ Alkmaar 86%, the draw 10%, Willem II 4%. It finished AZ Alkmaar 1–1 Willem II.
AZ Alkmaar's rating gap decides it — AZ Alkmaar are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of AZ Alkmaar's 86%. The draw at 10% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why AZ Alkmaar at 86%?
AZ Alkmaar sit 514 points higher on our strength rating — 1877 to 1363. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge at home won 79.8% of 5,119 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 90–7–3.
Why not higher?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims AZ Alkmaar's column. Across 11,040 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw only 10%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 8.4%. These teams' recent games average 4.1 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 17,172. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
AZ Alkmaar average 12 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 514 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. AZ Alkmaar have gained 99 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: climbing sides won 41.4% of 12,342 such games vs 40.6% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
