Lankshear's late double sinks Lincoln as Middlesbrough fight back
Middlesbrough opened their Championship campaign with a 2-1 win over Lincoln at Riverside Stadium, coming from behind to snatch victory with a stoppage-time winner. The result lifted Kim Hellberg's side to seventh in the early table, while Lincoln remain without a win after this opening fixture.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Lincoln struck first when Adam Reach converted an Tendayi Darikwa assist in the 12th minute, and that lead held all the way to half-time despite Middlesbrough's territorial dominance. William Lankshear levelled matters in the 62nd minute, dragging the hosts back into a contest they had largely controlled without reward.
The decisive moment arrived deep into added time, as Lankshear struck again in the 90+1st minute, this time teed up by Riley McGree, to complete his brace and hand Middlesbrough all three points. Lincoln, who had shown resilience for long periods, were undone by a home side that pressed until the very end.
Adilson Malanda produced the highest-rated display on the pitch at 7.9, anchoring a Middlesbrough side that dominated for large spells before the late breakthroughs.
Middlesbrough's overwhelming 78% share of possession underlined how thoroughly they controlled proceedings, even before their goals arrived.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Middlesbrough 31%, the draw 31%, Lincoln 38%. It finished Middlesbrough 2–1 Lincoln.
Lincoln's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Lincoln are the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade plus a weak Championship home advantage on top give Lincoln the lean. The draw at 31% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Lincoln at 38%?
Lincoln sit 168 points higher on our strength rating — 1551 to 1719. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge on the road won 40.1% of 13,044 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Middlesbrough's column. Across 10,563 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. Championship home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (26.9% vs 24.9% norm). Championship homes won 43.0% of 8,356 games vs 44.9% across all 99,031 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly. The 300 most similar past games finished 29–28–43.
Why only 38%?
Middlesbrough sit -0.60 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Finishing swings carry a receipt at this rating gap too: sides finishing this cold won 38.7% of 2,344 such games where the class table expected 36.3%.
Why is the draw second, level with the Middlesbrough win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.8 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,785. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
Middlesbrough average 17 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 168 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Lincoln are newly promoted — game 1 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
