Bolton hold off late Preston rally to win Championship opener
Bolton began their Championship campaign with a 2-1 win over Preston at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, moving Steven Schumacher's side top of the table after matchday one. Samuel Dalby put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute before Thierry Gale doubled the lead in the 25th, assisted by John McAtee, giving Bolton a 2-0 cushion at half-time.

Preston, under Paul Heckingbottom, offered little response until deep into the second half, when Jusef Erabi pulled a goal back in the 86th minute with an assist from Andrija Vukčević. The late strike set up a nervy finish but Bolton held on for the points, leaving Preston without a win to open their season.
Bolton dominated for long spells, holding 55% of possession and firing 15 shots to Preston's 8, with six on target compared to three for the visitors. The hosts also edged the expected goals count 1.1 to 0.81, a reflection of the greater control they exerted for much of the contest.
Gale scored the second goal and was rated the top performer on the pitch with an 8.3 mark, while Erabi's late strike for Preston earned him a 7.3 rating.
Bolton's 15 shots to Preston's 8 underlined how much more threatening the hosts were in front of goal.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Bolton 32%, the draw 34%, Preston 34%. It finished Bolton 2–1 Preston.
Anyone's game — Preston are the stronger side on our strength rating, and Bolton's control of the ball against their cold finishing due to recover plus the early-season home fade cancels out. The draw at 34% is level with the Preston win, lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Preston at 34%?
Preston sit 82 points higher on our strength rating — 1310 to 1393. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge on the road won 32.9% of 10,505 such games. Preston sit -0.35 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Visitors this cold went on to win 32.5% of 1,302 games, vs 28.9% for visitors finishing normally. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Bolton's column. Across 10,563 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 39–31–30.
Why only 34%?
Bolton hold 5 more possession points (51 to 46 in recent games) across a 82-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 75–150-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,587 such games where the class table expected 41.3%.
Why is the draw level with the Preston win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 28.3%. These teams' recent games average 3.1 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,785. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
Bolton are newly promoted — game 1 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. Last 6 between them: Bolton 0 wins, 3 draws, Preston 3 wins. Most recently Bolton 1–2 Preston, 8 years ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 28.0% of 5567 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points.
