West Brom hold off Norwich fightback to win at Carrow Road
West Brom came away from Carrow Road with a 2-1 win over Norwich in the opening round of the Championship season, despite being second-best for long spells on the balance of play. The match was goalless at half-time before a productive final quarter turned it decisively the visitors' way.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Aune Heggebø broke the deadlock in the 75th minute, converting a J. Morgan assist to put West Brom ahead. Morgan then turned scorer himself in the 87th minute, finishing off a Max O'Leary assist to make it 2-0. Norwich pulled one back deep into stoppage time through Mathias Kvistgaarden in the first minute of added time, but there was no time left for a leveller.
Norwich dominated territory and chances, holding 54% of possession and firing 20 shots to West Brom's eight, with an expected-goals reading of 2.72 against 1.45 for the visitors. Philippe Clement's side could not turn that dominance into a result, while West Brom made their moments count with clinical finishing from Heggebø and Morgan.
Max O'Leary earned the top rating on the pitch after setting up Morgan's decisive second goal, capping a productive afternoon from the West Brom goalkeeper.
Norwich's 20 shots to West Brom's eight told the story of a match in which the hosts monopolised attacking play without turning it into victory.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Norwich 49%, the draw 30%, West Brom 21%. It finished Norwich 1–2 West Brom.
Norwich's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Norwich are the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Norwich's 49%. The draw at 30% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Norwich at 49%?
Norwich sit 146 points higher on our strength rating — 1574 to 1428. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.2% of 12,695 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 61–25–14.
Why only 49%?
West Brom sit -0.33 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Finishing swings carry a receipt at this rating gap too: sides finishing this cold won 38.7% of 2,344 such games where the class table expected 36.3%. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Norwich's column. Across 10,563 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the West Brom win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,561. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. Championship runs draw-heavy, adding 2.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
West Brom have gained 83 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: climbing sides won 41.5% of 12,153 such games vs 40.7% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Last 6 between them: Norwich 4 wins, 1 draw, West Brom 1 win. Most recently Norwich 3–1 West Brom, 6 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 43.1% of 5035 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points.
