Chair inspires QPR to opening-day rout of Portsmouth
QPR opened their Championship campaign with a 3-1 win away at Portsmouth, coming from behind to score three times before half-time. Terry Devlin gave the hosts an early lead on 15 minutes, finishing an Ebrima Adams assist to put Portsmouth ahead. QPR responded quickly, with Ilias Chair levelling in the 33rd minute from a Harvey Vale pass. Koki Saito then put the visitors in front seven minutes later, and Chair added his second, and QPR's third, deep into first-half stoppage time to complete the turnaround before the break.
Despite conceding three times, Portsmouth had more of the ball and edged the shot count, finishing with 54 percent possession and 16 attempts to QPR's 13. Both sides managed six shots on target, and the expected goals figures were tight at 1.9 for Portsmouth against 2.04 for QPR, underlining how clinical the visitors were with the chances they took.
Ilias Chair scored twice and set up Saito's goal, finishing with a rating of 8.7 as the driving force behind QPR's win.
Portsmouth held the edge in possession with 54 percent of the ball but still finished on the losing side.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Portsmouth 43%, the draw 28%, QPR 29%. It finished Portsmouth 1–3 QPR.
Level sides, home ground swings it, even this early in the season — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and Portsmouth's 43% is home ground and little else. The draw at 28% is up from the usual 26.5% between sides this level, as small adjustments add up.
Why Portsmouth in front?
Home ground, and little else. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1430 to 1423. Sides this close won 45.6% of 14,465 home games (draw 26.5%, visitors 27.8%).
Why only 43%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Portsmouth's column. Across 10,563 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. Championship home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (26.9% vs 24.9% norm). Championship homes won 43.0% of 8,356 games vs 44.9% across all 99,031 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 28%?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 26.5%. These teams' recent games average 3.2 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 16,913. The goals environment takes 2.4 points off the draw. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Last 5 between them: Portsmouth 3 wins, 1 draw, QPR 1 win. Most recently QPR 6–1 Portsmouth, 5 months ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 43.1% of 5035 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. Portsmouth's last five: W-L-W-D-L — clearly the hotter side on recent results. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.8% of 2181 games when clearly hotter and 42.9% of 3989 when clearly colder.
