Barnes brace sends Newcastle past West Brom in League Cup thriller
Newcastle beat West Brom 3-2 in a League Cup Round of 64 tie that swung back and forth before the hosts held on. Isaac Price put the visitors ahead in the 19th minute, only for Bazoumana Touré to level things before half-time, the sides going in level at 1-1 at the break.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Newcastle came out sharper after the interval and Harvey Barnes restored their lead in the 48th minute, assisted by Malick Thiaw. West Brom responded through Price again, converting a penalty in the 77th minute to make it 2-2 and set up a tense finish. But Barnes struck once more four minutes later, latching onto a second assist from Amar Dedić to make it 3-2 and settle the contest.
Newcastle dominated possession with 57 percent of the ball and produced 16 shots to West Brom's 12, seven of them on target compared to the visitors' three. Despite West Brom's resistance and Price's two well-taken goals, Newcastle's greater control ultimately told as they progressed to the next round.
Harvey Barnes scored twice, including the decisive 81st-minute winner, to finish with a rating of 9.5. Isaac Price also impressed for West Brom, netting both of his side's goals including a 77th-minute penalty.
Newcastle's 57 percent share of possession underlined their control for much of the match.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Newcastle 83%, the draw 11%, West Brom 6%. It finished Newcastle 3–2 West Brom.
Newcastle's rating gap decides it — Newcastle are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Newcastle's 83%. The draw at 11% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why Newcastle at 83%?
Newcastle sit 412 points higher on our strength rating — 1877 to 1465. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge at home won 79.7% of 5,087 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 85–10–5.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 83% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 11% and West Brom at 6%.
Why is the draw only 11%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 10.9%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,879.
What did we measure but not count?
Newcastle have shed 120 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.7% of 9,660 such games vs 34.5% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. West Brom have gained 77 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: climbing sides won 41.4% of 12,232 such games vs 40.7% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
