Profile
Erling Haaland is a Norwegian centre-forward whose threat often develops before he touches the ball. He looks for gaps between defenders, then accelerates into the space beyond them. That combination of positioning and speed can turn a through-ball into a clear shooting chance.
Born in Leeds on 21 July 2000, he grew up in Bryne after his family returned to Norway. He progressed through Bryne’s youth system and first team before moving to Molde, where he finished the 2018 league season as the club’s leading scorer.
Red Bull Salzburg brought him to Austria in January 2019. That September, he scored a hat-trick on his Champions League debut against Genk. Another emphatic introduction followed at Borussia Dortmund: coming off the bench against Augsburg in January 2020, he scored three times in a 5–3 win.
His Dortmund spell also brought a decisive contribution to a trophy: two goals in the 4–1 victory over RB Leipzig in the 2021 German Cup final. He joined Manchester City in July 2022 after establishing himself in both Austrian and German football.
In 2022/23, Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions as City won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. His 36 league goals earned the Golden Boot and established a new Premier League season record, surpassing the 34 scored by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer in longer, 42-match campaigns.
Norway’s return to the World Cup in 2026 gave that scoring ability an international stage. Haaland finished the tournament with seven goals, including both in the 2–1 round-of-16 win over Brazil. Norway’s run ended with a 2–1 defeat by England after extra time in the quarter-finals.
The finishing itself can be as striking as the run. Against Dortmund in September 2022, he found space between two defenders and stretched into the air to hook João Cancelo’s cross home with his left foot. Premier League analysis has also highlighted how a controlled first touch prepares his shot after a sprint: reaching the ball is only the first part of the move.
Erling Haaland currently plays for Manchester City as a striker. He has represented Norway internationally.

They have played each other four times, all in the Champions League: Haaland scored every goal his team got in those games, five in all, and Mbappé's team still won all three ties.
