Why this comparison
Phil Foden, born in Stockport in May 2000, joined Manchester City's academy at eight; Bukayo Saka, 15 months younger, came through Arsenal's. Both first played for their clubs at 17, Foden in November 2017 and Saka a year later. Mikel Arteta links the two careers. As Pep Guardiola's assistant at City he said in October 2019 that Foden's potential was limitless; two months later Arsenal appointed him head coach, and he has managed Saka ever since. They first met in a senior game at the Emirates on 15 December 2019, when City won 3–0 with Arteta still on their bench. Since Guardiola left in 2026, City have been coached by another of his former assistants, Enzo Maresca.
For England they were rarely after the same shirt. Saka plays on the right; Foden has been used on both wings, as a No 10 and as a false nine, and before EURO 2024 Gareth Southgate said the key was where Foden ended up, not where he started. At that tournament both started all seven games, Foden on the left in the first four. Thomas Tuchel, head coach from 2025, said he did not see Foden as a winger, and on 22 May 2026, the day City announced Guardiola's departure, he named a World Cup squad with Saka in it and without Foden.

Have they played each other?
By 11 October 2026 they had been on opposite sides in 11 competitive games, all between Arsenal and Manchester City, and all 11 are in the list below. Foden's side won six, Saka's won one and four were drawn; the list counts the 2023 Community Shield as a draw, although Arsenal won it on penalties, with Saka scoring his kick. Each scored once and set up two goals in those games, but Foden started only five of the 11 and Saka eight. Three of them settled a trophy: that Community Shield, the League Cup final of March 2026, which City won 2–0 with Foden coming on in the 90th minute, and the 2026 Community Shield in Cardiff, which Arsenal won 3–0. In 11 more competitive games between the clubs from August 2018 only one of them, or neither, took part. For England they played in the same competitive game 27 times, from a 4–0 Nations League win over Iceland in November 2020, when Foden scored twice, to a World Cup qualifier in Albania in November 2025. The count below says 25 because our records do not yet include England's 2020–21 Nations League games or EURO 2020, which leaves out that Iceland game and the EURO 2020 semi-final against Denmark. Foden set up two of Saka's England goals, against Andorra in 2021 and Senegal at the 2022 World Cup; Saka has not set one up for Foden. Arsenal are due to host City on 29 November 2026, and the return at the Etihad is scheduled for 30 January 2027.

What the numbers don't show
The 2025/26 figures on the card hold two very different halves of Foden's season. He scored eight goals in nine City games between 5 November and 14 December 2025, and none in his 29 City games after that or his two England games in March. In May 2026 Guardiola said Foden needed to rediscover the joy he had playing as a boy, in the streets, at school or in City's academy, and that when he did, he would explode again. In the Premier League they finished 2025–26 level, seven goals and five assists each. Foden's lead in pass completion owes something to where he plays: in our line-up data for the two years to 12 October 2026, 44% of his minutes were in central midfield, 20% on the right wing and 13% as an attacking midfielder.
Their best seasons came in the same year. In 2023–24 Foden scored 27 goals for City and won the Premier League's player of the season award, the football writers' award and the PFA's players' award, as City beat Arsenal to the title by two points. Saka scored 16 league goals that season to Foden's 19, and an analysis on the Premier League's website in March 2024 argued he was having the better season, pointing to the league's highest expected-assists figure and the most touches in the opposition box.
Saka lost three months of 2024–25 to hamstring surgery; Foden called that season frustrating, citing an ankle injury and, in his words, things going on off the pitch. Arsenal won the 2025–26 title seven points clear of City, who won both domestic cups, with Foden coming off the bench in the 90th minute of one final and unused in the other. On 13 September 2026 he was sent off at Old Trafford for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, the first City player dismissed in a top-flight Manchester derby since 2006, and missed three games.

Questions fans ask
Who is better, Foden or Saka?
That depends on which seasons count, and the card at the top names a leader only where a gap is big enough to hold. Foden's peak went further: in 2023–24 he collected the three main player-of-the-year awards in English football, Guardiola called him the best player in the Premier League, and in the 2024 Ballon d'Or he finished 11th, the highest either has placed. Saka has scored far more for England: by October 2026 he had 19 goals from 59 caps, Foden four from 49. Opinion has followed their form. In February 2023 Jermain Defoe said Saka had "a little bit more"; in March 2025 Jamie Carragher said Saka and Jude Bellingham had grabbed their chance with England in a way Foden had not; and ESPN's list of the Premier League's 50 best players in August 2026 put Saka fourth and did not include Foden.
Saka vs Foden stats: who has scored and created more?
In the Premier League it has swung from season to season, on the league's own figures. In 2023–24 Saka had 16 goals and nine assists, Foden 19 and eight; in 2024–25, when Saka missed three months, he had six goals and ten assists to Foden's seven and two; and in 2025–26 each had seven and five. In all competitions Foden's best club season is the bigger one, 27 goals in 2023–24, when Saka scored 20 for Arsenal. For England it runs the other way, 19 goals to four by October 2026. Of 2026–27, up to 11 October Saka had three league goals in six games and Foden two assists in four. For per-90 figures, use the card at the top, which has three windows and is updated nightly.
Have Foden and Saka played against each other?
Yes, 11 times in competitive games by 11 October 2026, every one of them Arsenal against Manchester City: eight in the Premier League, two Community Shields and the 2026 League Cup final, though in the 2026 Community Shield Foden went off just before Saka came on. Foden's side won six and Saka's one, with four draws, counting the 2023 Community Shield, which Arsenal won on penalties, as a draw. Each scored once: Foden in City's 3–0 win in June 2020, on the night the Premier League restarted after the Covid-19 shutdown, and Saka from the penalty spot in a 3–1 City win at the Emirates in February 2023.
Why did Foden miss the 2026 World Cup?
When he named the squad on 22 May 2026, Tuchel did not single Foden out. Asked about leaving out Foden, Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold, he said that for some of them it came down to position, as he did not want to take five No 10s and play them out of position. He also said England were building the best possible team, which was not necessarily the 26 most talented players, and ESPN's report noted that Foden had had a below-par season at City and faced tough competition in his area of the pitch. Foden had started both of England's friendlies in March, as a No 10 against Uruguay and as a false nine against Japan, and afterwards Tuchel said he had been excellent in camp but struggled to show it on the pitch, and that a place was not guaranteed. He was left out again for the four Nations League games of September and October 2026, in a squad named five days after his red card at Old Trafford. Saka went to the World Cup and played in seven of England's eight games.
When do Foden and Saka play each other next?
Arsenal are due to host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday 29 November 2026, kicking off at 16:30 UK time at the Emirates, and the return at the Etihad is scheduled for 30 January 2027, with its kick-off time still to be set. The clubs cannot meet in a cup before 29 November: in the League Cup's fourth round Arsenal go to Fleetwood and City host Brighton, and they were not drawn together in the Champions League's league phase, which keeps clubs from the same country apart. After six league games each, City led the table with 18 points and Arsenal were second with 15, as of 11 October 2026. Another game together for England would need Foden to be recalled; England's next games are due in November 2026.
What have Foden and Saka won?
Foden has won far more with his club. By October 2026 his honours with Manchester City included six Premier League titles, the 2023 Champions League, three FA Cups and five League Cups, as well as the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 2023; at 17 he also won the Under-17 World Cup with England and was named the tournament's best player. Saka's league title came in 2025–26, Arsenal's first in 22 years, and he also has the 2020 FA Cup and three Community Shields. Both lost the EURO 2024 final with England; Saka also lost the EURO 2020 final, which Foden missed with a foot injury, and was third at the 2026 World Cup. Foden was the PFA's young player of the year in 2021 and 2022, Saka in 2023, and Saka has twice been voted England's men's player of the year, an award Foden has not won.
