Overview
Birmingham in brief
Founded in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, Birmingham City took the name Birmingham in 1905 and Birmingham City in 1943. The club are based in the Bordesley area of Birmingham and have played at St Andrew's since 1906; since 2024 the ground has carried the sponsored name St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park. Blue has been the club colour from the early Small Heath days, giving rise to the nickname Blues, while supporters are known as Bluenoses.
As Small Heath, the club were founder members and first champions of the Football League Second Division in 1892-93, and they have won the second tier four times in all. They have also won third-tier titles in 1994-95 and 2024-25, and the League Cup in 1963 and 2011, beating Aston Villa and then Arsenal in the finals. In 1960 Birmingham became the first English club side to reach a major European final, losing the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final to Barcelona, and they reached the final again a year later.
