Overview

Hertha BSC in brief

Hertha BSC were founded in Berlin on 25 July 1892 as BFC Hertha 92 by the brothers Fritz and Max Lindner and Otto and Willi Lorenz. The name came from the Hertha, a steamer on which Fritz Lindner had sailed with his father, and its funnel gave the club its blue and white colours. A merger with Berliner Sport-Club added the letters BSC, kept after the two split again in 1930. Known as Die Alte Dame, the Old Lady, Hertha moved into the Olympiastadion in 1963.

Hertha reached six consecutive German championship finals from 1926, losing four before winning the title in 1930 and 1931. A founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963, the club were demoted to the Regionalliga by the DFB in 1965. They finished second in 1974-75 and reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1978-79. Later highlights include the 1999-2000 Champions League, two League Cups in 2001 and 2002, and 2. Bundesliga titles in 1990, 2011 and 2013 before relegation again in 2023.
