Overview

Avellino in brief

Avellino were founded on 12 December 1912 to give the Irpinian town a football team. They play in white and green and are nicknamed Lupi, the Wolves; a wolf, the emblem of Irpinia, has always featured on the badge. For decades they played at Piazza d'Armi in the town centre; since the early 1970s home has been the Stadio Partenio, named Partenio-Adriano Lombardi in 2011 after the captain of the first promotion to Serie A. Today's club, refounded in 2018, carries on the history that began in 1912.

Avellino reached Serie B in 1973 and Serie A in 1978, sealed by a 1-0 win at Sampdoria on the last day, then stayed in the top flight for ten consecutive seasons until 1988. The best finish was eighth in 1986-87. The run survived a five-point penalty from the 1980 betting scandal and the Irpinia earthquake of 23 November 1980. In 1986 the club also won the Torneo Estivo, a summer cup for Serie A sides.
