Overview

Maritimo in brief

Founded in 1910, Maritimo are a long-established football club from Funchal, the capital of Madeira, and are nicknamed O Maior das Ilhas, the Greatest of the Islands. Their green and red colours, taken from the new Republican flag of Portugal, were chosen to set the club apart from blue-and-white rivals Club Sports da Madeira, giving rise to the name Os Verde-Rubros. Home matches are played at the Estadio do Maritimo, still widely called Barreiros, which was rebuilt in stages and completed in 2016.

In 1926 Maritimo became champions of Portugal by winning the Campeonato de Portugal, the national competition of the era before the modern league. They have since won three second-tier titles, in 1976-77, 1981-82 and 2025-26, and spent 38 consecutive seasons in the top flight from 1985 until relegation in 2023. That spell brought Taca de Portugal finals in 1995 and 2001, two Taca da Liga finals and repeated UEFA Cup and Europa League campaigns.
