Overview

Gremio in brief

Gremio were founded in Porto Alegre on 15 September 1903 by businessman Candido Dias da Silva and a group of men, most of them from the city's German immigrant community, with Carlos Luiz Bohrer as first president. The blue, black and white striped shirt, worn since 1928, gives the nickname Tricolor, which fans extend to Imortal Tricolor. The club played at the Baixada until 1954 and then at the Olimpico, before moving to the Arena do Gremio, which opened in December 2012 with a friendly against Hamburg.

Gremio won the Copa Libertadores in 1983 and the Intercontinental Cup the same year, beating Hamburg 2-1. Further Libertadores titles followed in 1995 and 2017, along with Brazilian championships in 1981 and 1996 and Copa do Brasil wins in 1989, 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2016. The club were relegated in 1991, 2004 and 2021 and came back each time; the 2005 return, sealed in the match remembered as the Batalha dos Aflitos, also brought the Serie B title.
