Overview

Philadelphia Union in brief

Philadelphia Union were founded on 28 February 2008, when Major League Soccer awarded the city its 16th team, and began play in 2010. Grassroots support led by the Sons of Ben, a supporters' group formed in 2007 and honoured by the light blue in the crest, helped win the team. Fans chose the name in a poll; it alludes to the union of the Thirteen Colonies, and the navy and gold recall the Continental Army. Home is Subaru Park, on the Delaware River in Chester; it opened in June 2010 as PPL Park.

The Union won their first trophy, the Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record, in 2020, which also brought a first CONCACAF Champions League campaign, ending in the 2021 semifinals. In 2022 they reached MLS Cup, drawing 3-3 with LAFC after extra time before losing the shootout 3-0, and in 2023 they reached the Champions League semifinals again. A second Shield followed in 2025, clinched with a 1-0 win over New York City FC. The club have also lost three U.S. Open Cup finals, in 2014, 2015 and 2018.
