Overview

Houston Dynamo in brief

Houston Dynamo FC were founded on 15 December 2005, when MLS moved the San Jose Earthquakes' players and coaches to Houston and kept the Earthquakes' name, colours and records for a future San Jose team. First announced as Houston 1836, the club became the Dynamo in March 2006 after protests over the date's link to Texan independence; the name nods to the city's energy industry. The team plays in orange and in 2012 left Robertson Stadium for its own ground, now Shell Energy Stadium.

Houston won MLS Cup in their first season, 2006, beating New England 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, the first shootout in MLS Cup history. A 2-1 win over New England in 2007 made Houston the second club to win back-to-back MLS Cups. After moving to the Eastern Conference in 2011 they reached two more finals, losing to LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012. They won the U.S. Open Cup in 2018 and 2023, the second time with a 2-1 win over Inter Miami in Fort Lauderdale.
