Overview

Toronto FC in brief

Toronto FC were founded on 27 October 2005 and joined Major League Soccer in 2007 as its first Canadian club, owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which paid US$10 million for the franchise. The club play in red and white and are known as the Reds. Home is BMO Field at Exhibition Place, built for that first season, switched to natural grass in 2010 and expanded in 2015-16 with an upper deck on the east side and a roof over most of the seats.

In 2017, under coach Greg Vanney, Toronto became the first MLS team to win a domestic treble: the Canadian Championship, the Supporters' Shield with a then-record 69 points, and MLS Cup, won 2-0 against Seattle Sounders at BMO Field, which made them the first Canadian MLS champions. Seattle had beaten them on penalties in the 2016 final and beat them again in 2019. Toronto have won the Canadian Championship eight times and reached the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League final, losing to Guadalajara on penalties.
