Overview

New York Red Bulls in brief

The New York Red Bulls were founded in 1994 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, a name taken from the media company Metromedia, and played in MLS's first season in 1996. Tab Ramos, the first player to sign with MLS, was also the first MetroStar. Red Bull bought the club on 9 March 2006 and renamed it. After 14 seasons at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, the team moved in 2010 to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, a 25,000-seat stadium renamed Sports Illustrated Stadium in December 2024.

The club's first major trophy was the 2013 Supporters' Shield, and it won the Shield again in 2015 and 2018, the last time with a club-record 71 points. The team lost MLS Cup finals in 2008, 3-1 to Columbus, and 2024, 2-1 to LA Galaxy, and were U.S. Open Cup runners-up in 2003 and 2017. They reached the CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals in 2018 and made the MLS playoffs in 15 consecutive seasons, from 2010 to 2024.
