Overview

Portland Timbers in brief

The Portland Timbers were founded on 20 March 2009, when Major League Soccer named Portland its 18th team, and played their first MLS season in 2011. The name dates to 1975, when an earlier Timbers club joined the original North American Soccer League and reached Soccer Bowl '75 in its first season, helping the city earn the label Soccer City USA. A second-division Timbers side played from 2001 to 2010. Home is Providence Park in the Goose Hollow district, opened in 1926 as Multnomah Stadium and later called Civic Stadium.

Portland won MLS Cup in 2015, beating Columbus Crew 2-1 in Columbus; Diego Valeri scored after 27 seconds, the fastest goal in MLS Cup history, and was named MVP. In 2020 they won the MLS is Back Tournament, staged near Orlando after the league was suspended because of COVID-19, beating Orlando City in the final. The Timbers also reached MLS Cup in 2018, losing 2-0 to Atlanta United, and in 2021, when New York City FC won on penalties at Providence Park.
