Overview
1. FC Heidenheim in brief
1. FC Heidenheim trace their roots to a gymnastics club founded in Heidenheim an der Brenz in 1846, the year still carried in the club's full name. Football arrived in the town in the 1910s and passed through VfR, VfL and Heidenheimer SB before the football section became an independent club on 1 January 2007. The team plays in blue, red and white at the former Albstadion, which took the name Voith-Arena when the engineering firm Voith bought the naming rights after a short spell as GAGFAH-Arena.
The modern club rose quickly under Frank Schmidt, appointed head coach in September 2007. Heidenheim won the Regionalliga Sued in 2009, the 3. Liga in 2014 and the 2. Bundesliga in 2023, scoring two late goals on the final day to take the title and a first Bundesliga promotion. They finished eighth in their debut top-flight season, reached the Conference League knockout play-offs in 2024-25, and were relegated after three Bundesliga seasons in May 2026.
