Lorient in brief
Founded in 1926 by Joseph and Marie Cuissard, Lorient represent a Breton port whose maritime culture is central to the club's identity. Their nickname Les Merlus means the Hakes, a fish traditionally landed in the city's harbour, and their colours are orange and black. Lorient play at the Stade du Moustoir, officially named Stade Yves Allainmat, close to the city centre.
Lorient won the Championnat National in 1995 and later claimed Ligue 2 titles in 2020 and 2025. Their defining cup run came in 2002, when Jean-Claude Darcheville scored the winner against Bastia in the Coupe de France final. Coach Christian Gourcuff shaped several important periods through a patient, passing approach, helping establish the club in the professional divisions and giving its rise a recognisable football identity.
