Nice held to goalless draw by Lorient at Allianz Riviera
Nice and Lorient shared a goalless draw in their opening Ligue 1 fixture of the season at Allianz Riviera, a result that leaves both sides level on a single point after matchday one. With no goals or cards of note beyond a lone yellow, the contest was shaped more by territory and chances than decisive moments.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Nice dominated the ball, holding 64 per cent possession and forcing eleven shots to Lorient's seven, along with a healthy edge in corners at seven to two. Yet clear-cut opportunities were scarce for Olivier Pantaloni's side, who managed only one shot on target compared with Lorient's two, despite the visitors having far less of the play under Alexandre Dujeux.
The underlying numbers reflected a tightly matched affair, with Nice's expected goals of 0.92 barely ahead of Lorient's 0.87, underlining how few genuine openings either goalkeeper had to deal with. Referee Romain Lissorgue oversaw a fairly even game in terms of discipline, with ten fouls from Nice and six from Lorient, as neither team could find the breakthrough.
Antoine Mendy was Nice's top-rated performer with a 7.6 mark, edging out teammates Melvin Bard and Gauthier Hein, who both finished on 7.3, in an attacking display that ultimately yielded no goals.
Nice's dominance in territory was clear from their 64 per cent share of possession, though it never translated into a breakthrough.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Nice 36%, the draw 32%, Lorient 32%. It finished Nice 0–0 Lorient.
Home ground outweighs Lorient's rating edge — Lorient are the stronger side on our strength rating, but home ground gives Nice the lean. The draw at 32% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Nice at 36%?
Home ground, against the rating. Lorient sit 67 points higher on our strength rating — 1696 to 1763. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge on the road won 32.9% of 10,522 such games.
Why only 36%?
Because Lorient are the stronger side on our strength rating. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Nice's column. Across 10,641 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, level with the Lorient win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 28.3%. These teams' recent games average 2.4 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,608. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.5 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Nice sit -0.45 goals per game under chance-quality. For home sides we could not receipt a bounce-back — the measured cells sit inside each other's noise bands — so this is noted and scores 0. Lorient are winless in their last 8 visits to Nice. "Cursed ground" stories don't survive the receipts: winless visitors won 20.5% of 5,622 return visits vs 21.4% class-expected — the rating's own read already covers it.
