Overview

Holstein Kiel in brief

Holstein Kiel date their founding to 7 October 1900, when the Kieler Fussball-Verein, later 1. KFV, was formed. On 7 June 1917 it merged with FC Holstein, founded in 1902, to create the present club. Their blue, white and red match the colours of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, and the club are widely known as Die Storche, the Storks. Home matches are played at the Holstein-Stadion, which opened as the Holstein-Platz on 15 October 1911.

Kiel were German champions in 1912, beating Karlsruher FV 1-0 in the final, and runners-up in 1910 and 1930. They won the Regionalliga Nord in 1965, but dropped to the third tier in 1981 and won the title again in 2009 and 2013 as a fourth-tier league. Promotion in 2017 ended 36 years outside the second division, and a 1-1 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf in May 2024 made Kiel the first club from Schleswig-Holstein to reach the Bundesliga. They were relegated after one season in 2025.
