Overview

NEC Nijmegen in brief

NEC Nijmegen, usually known simply as NEC, trace their origins to Eendracht, founded on 15 November 1900 by working-class players from the lower town of Nijmegen. In 1910 Eendracht merged with NVV to form Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie, the name behind the initials. NEC play in red, green and black, and their home is the Goffertstadion, a 12,650-capacity ground in the Goffertpark built largely by unemployed workers, opened in 1939 and known as De Bloedkuul.

NEC have won the second-tier Eerste Divisie twice, in 1974-75 and 2014-15, and the third-tier Tweede Divisie in 1963-64. The KNVB Cup has so far eluded them despite six final appearances, in 1973, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2024 and 2026. Reaching the 1983 final took NEC into the Cup Winners' Cup, where they met Barcelona, and in 2003 a fifth-place finish took the club into the UEFA Cup for the first time.
