Overview

Charleroi in brief

Founded in 1904, Sporting Charleroi are the leading professional club of Charleroi in Belgium's Hainaut province and hold matricule number 22. Their black-and-white striped shirts gave rise to the nickname Les Zebres, first used in 1926, and the team are also known as Les Carolos. Home is the Stade du Pays de Charleroi, the former Stade du Mambourg, which was rebuilt for Euro 2000 and hosted England's 1-0 win over Germany at the tournament.

Charleroi first reached the top flight in 1947 and spent 26 consecutive seasons there from 1985 to 2011. Their best league finish is second place in 1968-69, and they lost Belgian Cup finals to Beveren in 1978 and Standard Liege in 1993. The club's senior honours are two second-tier titles, in 1946-47 and 2011-12, and two third-tier titles, in 1928-29 and 1936-37.
