Overview

Genk in brief

KRC Genk were formed in 1988 by the merger of two clubs from Genk in Belgian Limburg, Waterschei Thor and KFC Winterslag, and took over Winterslag's matricule number 322. The blue-and-white side are nicknamed De Smurfen, the Smurfs. Home is the Cegeka Arena, the former Thyl Gheyselinck Stadium that was redeveloped in 1999 and later known as the Fenix Stadium, the Cristal Arena and the Luminus Arena.

Genk have won four Belgian league titles, in 1998-99, 2001-02, 2010-11 and 2018-19, as well as five Belgian Cups and two Belgian Super Cups. The rise began after promotion in 1996, with Aime Anthuenis leading the club to its first Belgian Cup in 1998 and its first title a year later, and the league titles brought UEFA Champions League group-stage campaigns in 2002-03, 2011-12 and 2019-20. Before the merger, Waterschei won the Belgian Cup in 1980 and 1982.
