Malaga snatch late point against Espanyol as Niño Heredia equalises in stoppage time
Malaga and Espanyol finished 1-1 at La Rosaleda in a La Liga Matchday 8 fixture, with Adrián Niño Heredia's goal in the third minute of stoppage time rescuing a draw for the hosts. The result left Malaga bottom of the table on four points from eight matches, while Espanyol stayed 11th on eight.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Espanyol took the lead in the 13th minute. Bryan Zaragoza finished a move created by Javier Hernandez to make it 1-0 to the visitors, and that was the score at half-time. It remained the only goal for much of a game in which Malaga carried the greater share of the ball without finding a way through.
Malaga pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half and had it with seconds to spare. Rafael Garrido supplied the delivery in the 90th minute plus three, and Niño Heredia converted to make it 1-1. The late goal denied Espanyol a win that would have lifted them further clear of the bottom three.
Neither side saw a red card, with Espanyol collecting five yellows to Malaga's four in a fixture refereed by Francisco Hernández Maeso.
David Larrubia earned the highest rating of any player on the pitch, 7.7, for Malaga. Bryan Zaragoza, who scored Espanyol's goal, followed on 7.59.
Malaga had 15 shots to Espanyol's 9, yet needed a stoppage-time goal to avoid defeat.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Malaga 44%, the draw 28%, Espanyol 28%. It finished Malaga 1–1 Espanyol.
Level sides, home ground swings it — Nothing separates them on our strength rating, and La Liga home advantage gives Malaga the lean. The draw at 28% is what level sides usually produce.
Why Malaga in front?
Home ground, mostly. Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1568 to 1608. Sides this close won 42.6% of 14,789 home games (draw 27.1%, visitors 30.3%). La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.0%). La Liga homes won 46.6% of 6,149 games vs 44.6% across all 100,999 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 44%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Level sides split the rest: the draw at 28% and Espanyol at 28%.
Why is the draw second, level with the Espanyol win?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 27.1%. These teams' recent games average 2.4 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.5% of 28,280. The goals environment adds 1.2 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Malaga sit -0.43 goals per game under chance-quality. For home sides we could not receipt a bounce-back — the measured cells sit inside each other's noise bands — so this is noted and scores 0. Malaga are newly promoted — game 8 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides are said to struggle, but our rating already carries most of it: across 3,012 first-ten games since 2016 they won 26.8% where the rating expected 28.1% — inside the noise band, below it in six of the ten full seasons we hold and about level last season. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
