Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Real Sociedad 58%, the draw 23%, Deportivo La Coruna 19%. It finished Real Sociedad 3–2 Deportivo La Coruna.
A slight rating edge to Real Sociedad, little else — Real Sociedad are a shade stronger on our strength rating, and Deportivo La Coruna's hot finishing due to cool plus their control of the ball on top give Real Sociedad a clear lead. The draw at 23% is nudged down by the same factors that shape the win chances.
Why Real Sociedad at 58%?
Real Sociedad sit 76 points higher on our strength rating — 1679 to 1603. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge at home won 50.3% of 10,384 such games. Deportivo La Coruna scored +0.37 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Visitors running this hot went on to win 27.1% of 1,453 games, vs 27.9% for visitors finishing normally. Real Sociedad hold 6 more possession points (50 to 44 in recent games) across a 76-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 60–120-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,622 such games where the class table expected 40.6%.
Why only 58%?
Real Sociedad scored +0.30 goals per game beyond chance-quality — home sides this hot gave some of it back. Opponents of hot-finishing home sides won 28.6% of 1,474 games, vs 27.6% against normal finishing.
Why is the draw only 23%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 26.8%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.8% of 25,145. The cool-off factor takes 2.4 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Deportivo La Coruna are newly promoted — game 8 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides are said to struggle, but our rating already carries most of it: across 3,012 first-ten games since 2016 they won 26.8% where the rating expected 28.1% — inside the noise band, below it in six of the ten full seasons we hold and about level last season. Out: Jon Aramburu, a star player, and Orri Óskarsson, a rotation player. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
