Match report
Lyon strike twice late to beat Toulouse in Ligue 1 opener
Lyon began their Ligue 1 campaign with a 2-0 win away at Toulouse, a result that lifted Paulo Fonseca's side to third in the early table while Jens Askou's Toulouse remained without a point after their opening match at the Stadium de Toulouse.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The first half finished goalless despite Toulouse dominating the ball, and it was Lyon who broke the deadlock after the break. Noah Nartey converted a Pavel Šulc assist in the 68th minute to put the visitors ahead, before Malick Fofana added a second in the 85th minute, teed up by Corentin Tolisso, to seal the points.
Toulouse held more of the possession at 53 per cent but managed only six shots and one on target, well below Lyon's tally of 17 attempts and a 2.63 expected-goals reading that reflected how clinical the visitors were in front of goal despite seeing less of the ball.
Nartey scored the opener in the 68th minute and finished with a 7.3 rating, one of three Lyon players sharing the joint-top mark alongside Rémy Descamps and Clinton Mata.
Lyon's 2.63 expected-goals figure against Toulouse's 0.16 underlined how much more threatening the visitors were in the final third despite having less of the ball.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Toulouse 35%, the draw 29%, Lyon 36%. It finished Toulouse 0–2 Lyon.
Anyone's game — Lyon are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their control of the ball plus the early-season home fade is not enough to separate them. The draw at 29% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why Lyon at 36%?
Lyon sit 98 points higher on our strength rating — 1757 to 1855. Sides with a 50–100-point rating edge on the road won 32.9% of 10,522 such games. Lyon hold 12 more possession points (52 to 40 in recent games) across a 98-point rating gap. Control now carries a receipt beyond near-equals too: sides with this control edge at a 75–150-point rating gap won 42.6% of 8,607 such games where the class table expected 41.3%. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Toulouse's column. Across 10,641 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 33–30–37.
Why only 36%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 36% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 29% and Toulouse at 35%.
Why the draw at 29%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 28.3%. These teams' recent games average 3.4 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 16,962. The goals environment takes 2.4 points off the draw. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Toulouse's last five: D-W-W-D — clearly the hotter side on recent results. Between equals, recent form told us almost nothing: the home side won 44.7% of 2186 games when clearly hotter and 42.9% of 3996 when clearly colder.
