Ten-man Fortuna Sittard swept aside by Hornkamp double for AZ Alkmaar
Fortuna Sittard were beaten 2-0 by AZ Alkmaar at Fortuna Sittard Stadion in an Eredivisie round three fixture that was effectively decided inside the opening five minutes. Ole Romeny was sent off for the home side in the 5th minute, leaving Danny Buijs's team to play almost the entire match with ten men.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
AZ, managed by Leeroy Echteld, made their numerical advantage tell after the break. Jizz Hornkamp opened the scoring in the 58th minute, converting a chance created by Elijah Dijkstra, before adding a second deep into stoppage time in the 90+5th minute, this time assisted by Ayoub Oufkir, to complete the scoring at 0-2.
The extra man told heavily in the underlying numbers, with AZ dominating possession at 72 percent and firing 26 shots to Fortuna's four. Despite that overwhelming territorial control, Fortuna goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst kept the scoreline respectable until the closing stages, while AZ's win lifted them to the top of the table on nine points from three games.
Branderhorst was rated the best performer on the pitch at 8.9 despite finishing on the losing side, a reflection of the workload he faced behind a ten-man Fortuna defence.
AZ's 3.43 expected goals total against Fortuna's 0.44 underlined just how one-sided the chance creation was across the 90-plus minutes.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Fortuna Sittard 13%, the draw 17%, AZ Alkmaar 70%. It finished Fortuna Sittard 0–2 AZ Alkmaar.
AZ Alkmaar's rating gap outweighs Fortuna Sittard's home ground — AZ Alkmaar are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top makes it one-sided for AZ Alkmaar. The draw at 17% is about what a gap this size usually leaves.
Why AZ Alkmaar at 70%?
AZ Alkmaar sit 342 points higher on our strength rating — 1518 to 1860. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge on the road won 65.8% of 5,189 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Fortuna Sittard's column. Across 10,641 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 14–16–70.
Why not higher?
No scored evidence points the other way. 70% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 17% and Fortuna Sittard at 13%.
Why is the draw only 17%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 16.8%. These teams' recent games average 3.4 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 16,962. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The goals environment takes 1.4 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
AZ Alkmaar average 14 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 342 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. AZ Alkmaar have gained 114 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: climbing sides won 41.5% of 12,189 such games vs 40.7% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
