Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Metz 46%, the draw 28%, Sochaux 26%. It finished Metz 3–2 Sochaux.
Ball control gives Metz a slight lean — With almost nothing between the sides on our strength rating, Metz's usual control of the ball, 52 to 44 in possession in recent games, plus their home advantage gives them 46% against Sochaux's 26%. The draw sits at 28%, nudged up from the usual 27% by typical-scoring recent games and trimmed slightly by Metz's control.
Why Metz in front?
Almost nothing between them on our strength rating — 1481 to 1495. Sides this close won 42.6% of 14,828 home games (draw 27.1%, visitors 30.3%). Metz hold 8 more possession points (52 to 44 in recent games) — and between equals, control has been worth something. Between evenly-matched sides, home teams with this control edge won 48.2% of 5,150 games, vs 44.0% when styles were level.
Why only 46%?
Because on our strength rating there is nothing in it. Level sides split the rest: the draw at 28% and Sochaux at 26%.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Sochaux win?
Between sides this level the draw starts at 27.1%. These teams' recent games average 2.4 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.5% of 28,340. The goals environment adds 1.2 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Sochaux are newly promoted — game 9 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides are said to struggle, but our rating already carries most of it: across 3,012 first-ten games since 2016 they won 26.8% where the rating expected 28.1% — inside the noise band, below it in six of the ten full seasons we hold and about level last season. Metz won 2 of the last 4 meetings with Sochaux. The record is 2 wins for Metz, 2 draws and 0 wins for Sochaux. These were 4 Ligue 2 games played at both grounds between 8 October 2018 and 26 May 2023. Latest meeting: 26 May 2023 — Sochaux 0–1 Metz. In 5,185 historical matches between similarly rated teams, home sides with the stronger head-to-head record won 43.9%. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
