Osnabrück hold out at Bochum despite early scare against the run of play

VfL Osnabrück left the Vonovia Ruhrstadion with a 1-0 win over VfL Bochum in this 2. Bundesliga round three fixture, a result that owed as much to defensive resolve as to a swift start. Ismail Badjie struck in the fourth minute, finishing off an assist from Leonhard Münst to put the visitors ahead, and that goal proved decisive across the remaining 86 minutes.

Bochum dominated territory and chances thereafter, racking up 19 shots to Osnabrück's eight and completing far more of the game's possession at 65 per cent, yet they could not find a way past the visitors' rearguard. Their expected goals figure of 1.39 against Osnabrück's 0.42 underlined the gulf in created chances, but only one of Bochum's efforts actually tested the target, compared to two from Osnabrück.

The hosts also won the corner count five to one and committed more fouls, 14 to 10, as frustration grew without a breakthrough. Referee Felix Wagner issued five yellow cards in total, three to Osnabrück and two to Bochum, as the contest wore on without further goals, leaving Badjie's early strike to stand as the difference.

Robin Fabinski earned the highest rating on the pitch at 8.2 without registering a goal or assist, suggesting his contribution came from repelling Bochum's heavy pressure. Badjie, meanwhile, settled the contest inside four minutes and rated 7.7 for his decisive finish.

Bochum's 65 per cent share of possession contrasted sharply with their inability to convert territorial control into a scoreline advantage.

Sirius · Why these numbers

Before kick-off Sirius gave VfL Bochum 64%, the draw 20%, VfL Osnabrück 16%. It finished VfL Bochum 0–1 VfL Osnabrück.

VfL Bochum's rating gap decides it — VfL Bochum are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of VfL Bochum's 64%. The draw at 20% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.

Why VfL Bochum at 64%?

VfL Bochum sit 257 points higher on our strength rating — 1563 to 1306. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge at home won 67.0% of 5,958 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 66–18–16.

Why only 64%?

Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims VfL Bochum's column. Across 10,741 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.

Why is the draw only 20%?

With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 17.9%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 24,891. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.

What did we measure but not count?

VfL Osnabrück are newly promoted — game 3 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides ran below their rating in nine of the last ten seasons — 26.5% wins in their first ten games where the rating expected 30.0% (2,793 games since 2012), fading but still visible through game nineteen. Last 4 between them: VfL Bochum 2 wins, 2 draws, VfL Osnabrück 0 wins. Most recently VfL Osnabrück 1–2 VfL Bochum, 6 years ago. Fixture history hasn't carried forward once class is level: past leaders won just 43.1% of 5060 such games — no measurable edge, 0 points. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
