Gençlerbirliği stun Fenerbahçe with second-half comeback win
Gençlerbirliği began the Süper Lig season with a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe at Eryaman Stadium, overturning an early deficit despite being second-best for long spells. The result lifted the hosts to the top of the table after the opening round, while Fenerbahçe slipped to ninth.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Talisca put the visitors ahead in the 13th minute, finishing from an assist by Levent Mercan to give Fenerbahçe the lead they held for much of the first half. Gençlerbirliği responded before the break, with Franco Tongya converting a Sékou Koïta assist in the 37th minute to level the score at 1-1 by half-time.
The hosts turned the game on its head early in the second half when Oğulcan Ülgün struck in the 56th minute, assisted by Abdurrahim Dursun, to make it 2-1. That scoreline held to the final whistle despite Fenerbahçe dominating territory and chances for the remainder of the match.
Fenerbahçe controlled possession heavily and produced far more shots and corners across the ninety minutes, yet could not find a second goal to salvage a result against a Gençlerbirliği side that made the most of its limited openings.
Goalkeeper İrfan Eğribayat earned the highest rating on the pitch at 10.0, underpinning the home side's resistance, while Franco Tongya's equalising goal also drew a strong 8.3 mark.
Fenerbahçe dominated possession with 71% of the ball, yet it was Gençlerbirliği who left with all three points.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Gençlerbirliği S.K. 16%, the draw 23%, Fenerbahçe 61%. It finished Gençlerbirliği S.K. 2–1 Fenerbahçe.
Fenerbahçe's rating gap outweighs Gençlerbirliği S.K.'s home ground — Fenerbahçe are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Fenerbahçe a clear lead. The draw at 23% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Fenerbahçe at 61%?
Fenerbahçe sit 351 points higher on our strength rating — 1602 to 1952. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge on the road won 65.8% of 5,174 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Gençlerbirliği S.K.'s column. Across 10,563 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 19–21–60.
Why only 61%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 61% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 23% and Gençlerbirliği S.K. at 16%.
Why is the draw only 23%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 20.3%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,561. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.0 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Fenerbahçe average 13 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 351 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Fenerbahçe are missing 1 regular starter — Jayden Oosterwolde — about 33% of their usual starting-XI weight. A body count alone told us nothing. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
