Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Real Sociedad 42%, the draw 24%, Lyon 34%. It finished Real Sociedad 1–1 Lyon.
Home advantage edges Real Sociedad ahead of stronger Lyon — Lyon rate higher on our strength rating, 1771 to 1725, but the usual home advantage, which runs strong for home sides across the UEFA Europa League, lifts Real Sociedad to 42% against Lyon's 34%. The draw starts at 29% for a gap this size and falls to 24%, mainly because both teams' own recent games average 3.5 goals.
Why Real Sociedad at 42%?
Home ground, against the rating. Lyon sit 46 points higher on our strength rating — 1771 to 1725. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge on the road won 32.6% of 11,151 such games. UEFA Europa League home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to draws (23.2% vs 25.3% norm). UEFA Europa League homes won 46.9% of 4,493 games vs 44.6% across all 108,407 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why only 42%?
Because Lyon are the stronger side on our strength rating. The rest is the draw at 24% and Lyon at 34%.
Why the draw at 24%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 29.0%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 23.1% of 18,729. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw. UEFA Europa League produces fewer draws than most, taking 2.2 points off.
What did we measure but not count?
Real Sociedad scored +0.90 goals per game beyond chance-quality — home sides this hot gave some of it back. Opponents of hot-finishing home sides won 28.4% of 1,688 games, vs 27.9% against normal finishing. Out: Pavel Šulc, a rotation player, and Loïs Openda, on a provisional rating. Doubtful: Tyler Morton, an important player. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team.
