Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave FC Midtjylland 40%, the draw 26%, Ajax 34%. It finished FC Midtjylland 1–6 Ajax.
Home advantage edges FC Midtjylland past stronger Ajax — We give FC Midtjylland 40% because the usual home advantage outweighs Ajax's edge on our strength rating, where they sit 62 points higher at 1720 to 1658. The draw starts at the usual 29% for a gap this size but drops to 26%, as both sides' own recent games average 3.5 goals.
Why FC Midtjylland at 40%?
Home ground, against the rating. Ajax sit 62 points higher on our strength rating — 1720 to 1658. Sides with a 40–80-point rating edge on the road won 32.6% of 11,151 such games.
Why only 40%?
Because Ajax are the stronger side on our strength rating. The rest is the draw at 26% and Ajax at 34%.
Why the draw at 26%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 29.0%. These teams' recent games average 3.5 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 23.1% of 18,729. The goals environment takes 2.5 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Ajax have averaged 15 percentage points more possession than FC Midtjylland in recent games. That doesn’t change our forecast here. Ajax are 2 games into a new manager (Míchel), appointed 11 days ago. The famous new-manager bounce doesn't survive its receipt: sides with a new manager beat their rating by 0.9 points over 33,420 games — but sides on an equally bad run who kept their manager beat it by 2.4 over 31,777.
