Why this comparison

Barcola is the elder by two years and nine months. Born in Villeurbanne, next to Lyon, in September 2002, he came through Olympique Lyonnais and joined Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023; Doué, born in Angers in June 2005, came through Rennes and followed him to Paris a year later. They had met three times as opponents by then. For two seasons from August 2024 they were club team-mates as PSG won the Champions League twice, competing for the wide places with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who arrived in January 2025, once Ousmane Dembélé had moved into the middle. In France the question was usually put as Doué or Barcola: it was asked before PSG's biggest games, and again at the 2026 World Cup, where the two took France's left-wing place in turns.

On 31 August 2026 Liverpool signed Barcola, for a reported fee of up to £123 million with add-ons, and Luis Enrique explained the sale in terms of playing time. They are still France team-mates, and under Zinedine Zidane, France's coach since July 2026, the handovers went on: in his first four games one replaced the other twice.

Have they played each other?

They played against each other three times, all in Ligue 1 while Doué was at Rennes. Lyon beat Rennes 3–1 on 9 April 2023, with Barcola scoring the third goal and Doué on the pitch for 18 minutes, brought on and then taken off again; Rennes lost 3–1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain on 8 October 2023, with both coming off the bench; and PSG drew 1–1 with Rennes on 25 February 2024, when both started and Doué set up Amine Gouiri's opening goal. Barcola missed the clubs' Coupe de France semi-final in April 2024 with a hamstring injury, so only Doué played in it. From August 2024 they were on the same side: by 13 October 2026 both had played in 112 competitive games, 97 for PSG and 15 for France, the same 112 as the list below, every one of them matched with ESPN's line-ups. They started together in 39. In 28 one came on for the other, Doué for Barcola 15 times and Barcola for Doué 13, and in 31 of the 112 they were never on the pitch at the same moment. Their side won 77, drew 19 and lost 16. Seven of the games ended in penalty shoot-outs and their side won all seven: five after draws, and two after wins on the night that had left a two-legged tie level. Doué set up five of Barcola's goals and Barcola six of Doué's, and both scored in five games, all won. They played together in eight games with a trophy at stake, finals and super cups, and won seven, losing only the 2025 Club World Cup final to Chelsea; both started just two of them, the 2025 Coupe de France final and the 2025 UEFA Super Cup. Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool were not drawn together in the 2026–27 Champions League league phase, so their first chance to meet is the knockout stage, which opens with play-off games in February 2027. France's next games are due on 12 November 2026 in Milan, against Italy, and on 15 November 2026 in Bordeaux, against Türkiye.

What the numbers don't show

The 2025/26 figures on the card cover club and country together, the World Cup included: 3,008 minutes for Doué and 3,578 for Barcola. Both lost weeks to injury. Doué hurt a calf playing for France against Ukraine on 5 September 2025 and tore a thigh muscle at Lorient on 29 October 2025, returning in December; Barcola damaged ankle ligaments at Chelsea on 17 March 2026, missed the first leg of the quarter-final and came off the bench in PSG's four Champions League games after it, the final included.

Barcola started more games than Doué in both of their seasons together at PSG, among them all 16 of the club's Champions League league-phase games. The last rounds went the other way: from the quarter-finals on, Doué started nine of PSG's ten Champions League games across the two seasons and Barcola two, and both finals began with Kvaratskhelia on the left, Dembélé in the middle and Doué on the right. Before Kvaratskhelia's first game, on 25 January 2025, Barcola had started 24 of PSG's 28 games of 2024–25; in the rest of that season, leaving out the Club World Cup, he started 20 of 30.

They do different things with the ball. Opta's figures in April 2025 had Doué attempting 6.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 that season, more than anyone else with at least 750 minutes, and playing no more than 38% of his minutes in any one position. Barcola has spent 77% of his PSG minutes on the left and made 109 runs in behind in the 2025–26 Champions League, a number only four players beat. Doué's own description, before the World Cup round of 16, was that Barcola is more of a winger, fast with and without the ball, and that he himself is more comfortable in small spaces or in midfield.

Questions fans ask

Who is better, Désiré Doué or Bradley Barcola?

Their coaches have avoided ranking them. In May 2025, when Doué had moved ahead of Barcola for a starting place, Luis Enrique said it was not that Barcola had got worse since the start of the season or that Doué had got better, only an evolution with ups and downs. At the 2026 World Cup Didier Deschamps said one of them would start each game but that he would think again before every match. When neither made the 30-man list for the 2026 Ballon d'Or in September 2026, France Football's editor-in-chief, Vincent Garcia, wrote that their status as interchangeable players, for club and country, and seasons of good spells broken by spells on the bench had not helped either of them. The season awards have gone to Doué, as the answer on trophies below shows. Their numbers are on the card above, which names a leader in a window only when the gap is large enough to trust.

Why did Barcola leave PSG for Liverpool?

For playing time, in his coach's account. ESPN reported in August 2025 that PSG had turned down two approaches from Liverpool for him that summer; on 31 August 2026 Liverpool announced his signing, with two years left on his PSG contract, for a fee ESPN reported as £106 million guaranteed plus up to £17 million in add-ons, the club's second-biggest after Alexander Isak's. Three days later Luis Enrique said Barcola had wanted a bigger share of the playing time than he could guarantee, and that in the end everyone came out ahead. Barcola told Liverpool's website that all he wanted was to be on the pitch. He had played no pre-season after the World Cup, and by 13 October 2026 he had made six appearances for Liverpool, four of them starts, without a goal or an assist. The day before a Champions League game at LASK, Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's coach, said Barcola and Florian Wirtz had had good games and bad games since the season began, but that he was sure they would give the team good performances.

Who started for France at the 2026 World Cup, Doué or Barcola?

Each started four of France's eight games, all on the left of the attack, with Kylian Mbappé up front; in six of them Michael Olise played behind him and Ousmane Dembélé on the right. Deschamps began with Doué against Senegal and then mostly alternated: Barcola against Iraq, Doué against Norway, Barcola against Sweden and Paraguay, Doué against Morocco, Barcola in the 2–0 semi-final defeat by Spain and Doué in the 6–4 defeat by England for third place. Both played in all eight, and from the round of 16 one replaced the other in four games running. Barcola scored three goals, against Senegal two minutes after coming on, against Sweden and against England. Doué scored one, a stoppage-time header against Norway from Barcola's cross, his first headed goal as a professional, and set up Mbappé's goal against Morocco. Before the round of 32 Deschamps said their profiles made them dangerous in different areas and that he wanted the one who started and the one who came on to be good. Zidane started both in Brussels on 28 September 2026, Barcola on the left and Doué on the right, and in the two games after that one replaced the other on the left; in the second, a 4–1 win over Belgium on 5 October 2026, Doué came on for Barcola and scored once and set up two for Olise in 18 minutes.

Are Doué and Barcola friends?

They say so, and they turn down the idea of a rivalry. After the 4–1 win over Norway at the World Cup, Doué told beIN Sports that it was the media who set them up as rivals, as they had since he arrived in Paris, that the two of them liked playing together and got on very well off the pitch too, and that he was glad Barcola had given him the pass for his first headed goal. Four days later, after scoring against Sweden, Barcola said that playing with Doué was a pleasure and that Doué had given him a great many assists at PSG. One evening shows it: in the 2025 Coupe de France final against Reims, Doué set up both of Barcola's goals, in the 16th and 19th minutes, and PSG won 3–0.

Doué vs Barcola stats: who has scored more?

In total, Barcola, though not by rate. For France he had six goals in 32 games by 5 October 2026 and Doué four in 19, two of them in a friendly against Colombia; at the 2026 World Cup Barcola scored three and Doué one. In their 112 competitive games together Barcola scored 30 and Doué 28. In 2025/26, club and country together, the card counts 17 for Barcola and 14 for Doué, but Barcola played 570 more minutes, so per 90 minutes they scored at almost the same rate. Some of Doué's goals have been among PSG's biggest: two in the 5–0 Champions League final win over Inter in May 2025, the winner against Brest on 10 May 2026 that put PSG on the brink of the 2025–26 title, and the goal that beat Aston Villa for the UEFA Super Cup in August 2026. By 13 October 2026 neither had scored a league goal in 2026–27.

What have Doué and Barcola won?

With PSG, mostly the same trophies. Both won the Champions League in 2025 and 2026, Ligue 1 in 2024–25 and 2025–26, the 2025 Coupe de France, the 2025 UEFA Super Cup and the 2025 Intercontinental Cup; Barcola, in Paris a year earlier, also has the 2023–24 league title, the 2024 Coupe de France and three Trophées des Champions to Doué's two. Barcola was an unused substitute when Doué's goal won the next UEFA Super Cup, 19 days before he left. Neither has won a senior trophy with France, who finished fourth at the 2026 World Cup and lost the 2025 Nations League semi-final to Spain 5–4; Doué has an Olympic silver medal from 2024 and the 2022 European Under-17 Championship. The big individual awards are Doué's: the Champions League's young player of the 2024–25 season, ahead of Lamine Yamal, the 2025 Golden Boy and Ligue 1's young player of the year in 2025 and 2026. Barcola's include Ligue 1's player of the month award for September 2024.
