Overview

Catanzaro in brief

Catanzaro's story began in October 1927, when two local sides, Scalfaro and Braccini, merged as Unione Sportiva Catanzarese. The club traditionally dates its foundation to 1929, the year it was renamed Unione Sportiva Fascista Catanzarese, and has carried that year in its name since 2018. Yellow and red have been the colours from the start, and the eagle from the city's coat of arms gives the nickname Aquile. Home is the Stadio Nicola Ceravolo, opened in 1924 on a former military parade ground and named after Nicola Ceravolo, club president from 1958 to 1979.

Catanzaro were the first Calabrian club to reach Serie B, in 1933, and Serie A, in 1971, when Angelo Mammi scored the winner in a play-off against Bari in Naples. They have played seven Serie A seasons, finishing as high as seventh in 1981-82, and reached the 1966 Coppa Italia final as a Serie B side, losing 2-1 to Fiorentina. Third-tier titles came in 1935-36, 1958-59, 1984-85, 1986-87, 2003-04 and 2022-23.
