Overview

Fluminense in brief

Fluminense were founded on 21 July 1902 in the Laranjeiras district of Rio de Janeiro by a group led by Oscar Cox, who became the first president. The first kit was white and grey; members later voted for the maroon, white and green stripes behind the nickname Tricolor. The club's historic ground at Laranjeiras staged the Brazil national team's first match in 1914, and the Maracana is now home.

The CBF credits Fluminense with four Brasileirao titles, in 1970, 1984, 2010 and 2012, and the club won the Copa do Brasil in 2007. In 2023 they won the Copa Libertadores for the first time, beating Boca Juniors 2-1 after extra time at the Maracana, with John Kennedy scoring the winner after a goal from German Cano. The 2024 Recopa Sudamericana followed, and at the 2025 Club World Cup they beat Inter Milan and Al-Hilal before losing 2-0 to Chelsea in the semi-final.
