Overview

New York City FC in brief

New York City FC were founded on 21 May 2013 as MLS's 20th club, a venture between City Football Group, owners of Manchester City, and the New York Yankees' parent company, Yankee Global Enterprises, and began play in 2015. The colours are navy, sky blue and orange, the orange a nod to the city's Dutch origins. Home games have mainly been played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, with some at Citi Field in Queens; in December 2024 work began on the club's own 25,000-seat stadium, Etihad Park, in Queens.

NYCFC won MLS Cup in 2021, drawing 1-1 with the Portland Timbers at Providence Park and winning the shootout 4-2, with goalkeeper Sean Johnson saving two penalties. Valentin Castellanos, who opened the scoring, was that season's Golden Boot winner with 19 goals. In 2022 the club beat Atlas of Mexico in the Campeones Cup for its first international trophy. NYCFC were also Supporters' Shield runners-up in 2017 and 2019.
