Overview

Minnesota United FC in brief

MLS awarded Minnesota United FC to an ownership group led by Bill McGuire on 25 March 2015, and the team began play in 2017 under the name of its NASL predecessor. That club was founded in 2010 as NSC Minnesota by the National Sports Center in Blaine and became Minnesota United in 2013. Known as the Loons, after Minnesota's state bird, the team plays in grey, sky blue and black. After two seasons at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, it moved in 2019 to Allianz Field in Saint Paul.

The predecessor club won the 2011 NASL championship as the NSC Minnesota Stars and finished as runners-up in 2012. In 2014 it won the NASL spring season and the North American Supporters' Trophy for the best combined record. In MLS, Minnesota reached the 2019 U.S. Open Cup final, losing 2-1 to Atlanta United, and the 2020 Western Conference final, where they led Seattle 2-0 before conceding three late goals.
