Founded in 1904 as FC Malinois, KV Mechelen are the yellow-and-red club of Mechelen in the province of Antwerp and hold matricule number 25. Supporters gather under the name Malinwa, which is also the name of the supporters' federation, and the team are also known as De Kakkers. Their peak came in the late 1980s under coach Aad de Mos and chairman John Cordier: Piet den Boer's goal beat Ajax 1-0 in Strasbourg in the 1988 European Cup Winners' Cup final, the club then beat PSV for the European Super Cup and won the 1988-89 league title.
