Overview

Scottish Premiership in brief

The Scottish Premiership is the top division of Scottish football and has been played since 2013, when the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League merged to form the SPFL; the Scottish league championship it continues was first played in 1890–91. Twelve clubs play 33 rounds before the table splits into a top six and a bottom six, who play each other once more for a 38-match season, and the top six keep the top six places even if a club below finishes on more points.

Celtic and Rangers, Glasgow's Old Firm, have won more than 100 league titles between them, with Celtic holding the record. Aberdeen, in 1984–85, were the last club from outside the Old Firm to be champions.
