Ten-man Manchester City hold out as Haaland sinks Manchester United
Manchester City won 1-0 away to Manchester United at Old Trafford in Premier League matchday 4, despite playing more than an hour with ten men. The result lifted Erling Haaland's side into the top two of the table, while United remained mired in 13th place after another underwhelming home display.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
The contest turned early when Philip Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, leaving City to defend for the remainder of the game without their man advantage. United dominated possession and territory but could not find a breakthrough before the interval, with the sides level at 0-0 at half-time.
City struck against the run of play in the 60th minute when Haaland converted to make it 0-1, a lead his side never relinquished. United pressed for an equaliser, registering more shots and corners overall, but their finishing let them down as City's rearguard, marshalled through the numerical disadvantage, held firm to the final whistle.
Haaland scored the only goal of the match, a decisive second-half strike that proved enough for City to see out the game a man light, and he finished with the highest rating on the pitch at 7.73.
United had 16 shots to City's six yet still finished without a goal, underlining how profligate their finishing was despite City's red card.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Manchester United 22%, the draw 26%, Manchester City 52%. It finished Manchester United 0–1 Manchester City.
Manchester City's rating gap outweighs Manchester United's home ground — Manchester City are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Manchester City the lean. The draw at 26% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Manchester City at 52%?
Manchester City sit 223 points higher on our strength rating — 1984 to 2207. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 52.0% of 6,084 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Manchester United's column. Across 11,115 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.6% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 26–21–53.
Why only 52%?
No scored evidence points the other way. 52% is what this rating gap has been worth in games like these; the rest is the draw at 26% and Manchester United at 22%.
Why the draw at 26%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.0%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,076. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Manchester City average 12 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 223 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Manchester City are missing 1 regular starter — Nico O'Reilly — about 15% of their usual starting-XI weight. A body count alone told us nothing. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
