Match report
Inter overturn early deficit to sink Udinese 5-3 in eight-goal thriller
Inter came from two goals down to beat Udinese 5-3 in Serie A matchday four, a chaotic contest that swung wildly before Cristian Chivu's side pulled clear in the second half. Udinese led at the break despite the scoreline finishing level, having raced into a two-goal cushion inside the opening quarter of an hour.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
James Abankwah opened the scoring in the ninth minute, and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp doubled the away side's lead seven minutes later. Inter responded through Carlos Augusto in the 26th minute and Nicolò Barella levelled it at 2-2 by the 35th, setting up a frantic finish to the first half that left the score tied at the interval.
The hosts took control after the restart. Marcus Thuram put Inter ahead in the 57th minute, Francesco Esposito added a fourth in the 67th, and Ange-Yoan Bonny made it 5-2 in the 79th to put the result beyond doubt. Idrissa Gueye's stoppage-time strike for Udinese merely adjusted the final margin to 5-3.
Inter dominated territorially throughout, holding 65 percent of possession and firing 27 shots to Udinese's six, a gulf reflected in an expected goals tally of 3.09 against 0.79 for the visitors.
Thuram scored once and set up another as Inter surged clear after half-time, while Barella's goal and assist contribution also earned him a share of the night's top rating alongside Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.
Inter's 27 shots to Udinese's six underlined how one-sided the balance of play was despite the scoreline swinging back and forth.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Inter 79%, the draw 14%, Udinese 7%. It finished Inter 5–3 Udinese.
Inter's rating gap decides it — Inter are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of Inter's 79%. The draw at 14% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Inter at 79%?
Inter sit 399 points higher on our strength rating — 2142 to 1742. Sides with a more than 300-point rating edge at home won 79.8% of 5,130 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 83–10–7.
Why not higher?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Inter's column. Across 11,152 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.6% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. Serie A home sides under-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to the other outcomes. Serie A homes won 43.3% of 6,118 games vs 44.9% across all 100,205 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw only 14%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 10.9%. These teams' recent games average 3.0 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 24.6% of 25,088. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. Serie A runs draw-heavy, adding 1.0 points.
What did we measure but not count?
Inter average 18 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 399 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Inter are unbeaten in their last 14 league games at home (11 wins, 3 draws), a run going back to December 2025. Rolling home runs look imposing but sides on a 6+ run won 56.2% of 13,618 games vs 54.5% class-expected — and in our walked test the rating already carried it, as it did for the season-long record. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
