Tiago Araújo put the home side ahead in the 37th minute, and Gent doubled their advantage right on the stroke of half-time when J. Y. Vergara Ortega converted an assist from Momodou Sonko to make it 2-0. That scoreline stood through the interval and remained unchanged for the rest of the match, with no further goals or bookings of note beyond a single yellow card for the visitors.
Gent dominated territory and chances throughout, finishing with 53 percent possession and firing 15 shots to Mechelen's five, eight of which were on target compared to just two for the away side. Despite the one-sided shot count, Mechelen goalkeeper Nacho Mirás kept the deficit from growing further with a string of saves that earned him the joint-highest rating on the pitch.
Tiago Araújo scored the opening goal and matched a rating of 8.2, sharing top billing with Mechelen goalkeeper Nacho Mirás despite playing for the winning side.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Gent 55%, the draw 30%, KV Mechelen 15%. It finished Gent 2–0 KV Mechelen.
Gent's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Gent are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their cold finishing due to recover on top gives Gent a clear lead. The draw at 30% is lifted by a low-scoring environment.
Why Gent at 55%?
Gent sit 105 points higher on our strength rating — 1678 to 1572. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.2% of 12,664 such games. Gent sit -1.04 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Finishing swings carry a receipt at this rating gap too: sides finishing this cold won 38.7% of 2,331 such games where the class table expected 36.2%. The 300 most similar past games finished 53–29–18.
Why only 55%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Gent's column. Across 10,529 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.1 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the KV Mechelen win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.3 goals — a low-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 28.2% of 18,059. The goals environment adds 3.2 points to the draw. Early-season fixtures add 2.1 points to the draw.
