Sainte-Luce strike gives Montpellier narrow win over PAU
Montpellier edged PAU 1-0 in a Ligue 2 round six fixture at Stade de la Mosson, moving up to third in the table while their visitors remain 15th after the result. The only goal came with the match goalless at the interval, leaving Debes' side still searching for a response to their inconsistent recent form.
AI-assisted match report written from official match data.
Théo Sainte-Luce broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, finishing off a chance created by Florian Tardieu to put the home side ahead. PAU pushed for an equaliser thereafter but could not find a way past a Montpellier defence that held firm for the remainder of the contest, sealing the points for Camara's team.
Montpellier dominated territorially throughout, controlling possession and forcing more shots on target, while PAU's night was further complicated by a stack of fouls conceded and three yellow cards shown to their players.
Sainte-Luce scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute and finished with the highest rating of the match at 7.93, while Tardieu, who supplied the assist, was not far behind on 7.7.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Montpellier 56%, the draw 28%, PAU 16%. It finished Montpellier 1–0 PAU.
Montpellier's rating edge, but the draw is in play — Montpellier are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their cold finishing due to recover on top gives Montpellier a clear lead. The draw at 28% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Montpellier at 56%?
Montpellier sit 175 points higher on our strength rating — 1612 to 1436. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge at home won 57.1% of 12,794 such games. Montpellier sit -0.40 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Finishing swings carry a receipt at this rating gap too: sides finishing this cold won 39.0% of 2,433 such games where the class table expected 36.3%. The 300 most similar past games finished 59–23–18.
Why only 56%?
Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Montpellier's column. Across 11,040 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.7% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the PAU win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.2%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,793. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.3 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
PAU come into this after a busy window — 19 arrivals, 18 departures, and fewer of last season's regular starters still in the eleven. Squad turnover reads dramatic but hasn't moved results once the rating is controlled: the busiest windows landed within noise across 5,368 games, rebuilt elevens likewise across 5,446, and even losing the most regular starters showed nothing (5,336).
