Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave New York City FC 59%, the draw 23%, Santos Laguna 18%. It finished New York City FC 2–0 Santos Laguna.
New York City FC's rating gap decides it on neutral ground — New York City FC are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and that is most of New York City FC's 59%. The draw at 23% is lifted by neutral ground.
Why New York City FC at 59%?
New York City FC sit 213 points higher on our strength rating — 1652 to 1439. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge at home won 67.0% of 5,905 such games.
Why only 59%?
Leagues Cup is played on neutral grounds: New York City FC are the listed home side but get none of the usual home lift, so the class read is re-centred. On grounds we detect as neutral, listed-home sides won 44.6% of 26,824 games vs 45.2% at real homes — so a tournament game away from a side's own ground scores the class edge venue-free, as the average of the home and away reads.
Why is the draw only 23%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 19.6%. These teams' recent games average 2.5 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,490. Neutral ground adds 2.2 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.1 points to the draw.
