Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Portland Timbers 36%, the draw 25%, Seattle Sounders 39%. It finished Portland Timbers 2–1 Seattle Sounders.
Seattle Sounders' rating edge outweighs Portland Timbers' home ground — Seattle Sounders are the stronger side on our strength rating, and their cold finishing due to recover on top gives Seattle Sounders the lean. The draw at 25% is held down by a high-scoring environment.
Why Seattle Sounders at 39%?
Seattle Sounders sit 101 points higher on our strength rating — 1537 to 1638. Sides with a 100–200-point rating edge on the road won 40.2% of 13,001 such games. Seattle Sounders sit -0.33 goals per game below chance-quality — cold streaks like this have bounced back. Finishing swings carry a receipt at this rating gap too: sides finishing this cold won 38.7% of 2,318 such games where the class table expected 36.1%. The 300 most similar past games finished 35–27–38.
Why only 39%?
Major League Soccer home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (25.7% vs 30.2%). Major League Soccer homes won 49.5% of 5,056 games vs 44.9% across all 98,721 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 25%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.2%. These teams' recent games average 3.4 goals — a high-scoring environment. Games in that environment drew 22.8% of 16,823. The goals environment takes 2.3 points off the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Seattle Sounders have shed 105 strength-rating points over their last 10 games. Momentum is measured but not yet proven: sliding sides won 34.7% of 9,572 such games vs 34.5% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it stays at 0 points until the receipt clears its evidence bar. Portland Timbers are missing 1 regular starter — Kevin Kelsy — about 15% of their usual starting-XI weight. Our measured receipt covers one-sided absences only, and the picture here isn't one-sided — both squads are short. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
