Baena brace fires Atletico Madrid to 3-1 win at Sevilla
Atletico Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after a 3-1 victory away to Sevilla in matchday 3, having led 3-0 at half-time before a late Sevilla rally made the scoreline more respectable. The result lifted Diego Simeone's side to seven points from three games, while Sevilla remained fifth on six.

Atletico were ruthless in the opening spell. Álex Baena opened the scoring in the fourth minute, finishing an assist from Lee Kang-In, before Ademola Lookman doubled the lead in the 26th minute after being set up by Pablo Barrios. Baena struck again in the 33rd minute, converting a chance created by Marcos Llorente to put the visitors 3-0 up by half-time.
Sevilla improved after the break and pulled a goal back through M. Sierra in the 66th minute, assisted by Robert Ure, but could not find a way through again. Despite having less of the ball, Atletico made their attacking intent count, while Sevilla's late surge was not enough to threaten a full recovery.
Álex Baena scored twice, including the opener inside four minutes, and was rated the outstanding performer on the pitch with a 9.3 rating.
Sevilla enjoyed 58% of possession but were still undone by a more clinical Atletico Madrid side.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Sevilla 23%, the draw 28%, Atletico Madrid 49%. It finished Sevilla 1–3 Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid's rating gap, but the draw is in play — Atletico Madrid are clearly the stronger side on our strength rating, and the early-season home fade on top gives Atletico Madrid the lean. The draw at 28% is lifted by the early-season fade in home wins.
Why Atletico Madrid at 49%?
Atletico Madrid sit 223 points higher on our strength rating — 1780 to 2003. Sides with a 200–300-point rating edge on the road won 52.0% of 6,049 such games. Both sides are inside their first six league games — home wins land softer this early in the season, so this trims Sevilla's column. Across 10,761 opening-stretch games since 2010, home sides won 42.8% where the rating map expected 44.9%, with draws up 2.0 — negative in every season since 2018. The 300 most similar past games finished 27–24–49.
Why only 49%?
La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.2%). La Liga homes won 46.6% of 6,102 games vs 44.9% across all 99,457 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why is the draw second, ahead of the Sevilla win?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 24.1%. These teams' recent games average 2.7 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.2% of 27,679. Early-season fixtures add 2.0 points to the draw. The goals environment adds 1.3 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Atletico Madrid average 6 points more possession, but the rating gap here is 223 points. Our control receipt only exists between near-equals — there it moved results; across a class gap we could not measure a separate style edge, so style scores 0 here. Sevilla scored +0.36 goals per game beyond chance-quality lately — hot streaks like that have cooled off. Measured across 2,799 games at this rating gap, hot-finishing sides won 42.1% vs 42.9% class-expected — inside the noise band, so it scores 0 until the receipt clears its evidence bar. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
