Real Sociedad beat Malaga 5-2 at La Rosaleda on La Liga Matchday 9, in a match that produced seven goals. The visitors were two goals up by the 26th minute, Takefusa Kubo opening the scoring in the third minute from Héctor Fort's assist before Orri Óskarsson doubled the lead.

Malaga pulled one back in the 54th minute, Adrián Niño scoring from a Pablo Martínez assist, but the hosts' hopes lasted barely five minutes. Mikel Oyarzabal restored the two-goal cushion in the 59th minute, converting a Kubo assist to make it 3-1 to Real Sociedad.
Martínez reduced the deficit again in the 66th minute to make it 3-2, only for Oyarzabal to reply within a minute, finishing from Jon Martín's pass. Gonçalo Guedes added a fifth in the 73rd minute, and the home side found no way back.
The result left Malaga 20th on four points, and the milestones record them as now without a win in nine games. Real Sociedad moved up to fifth on 16 points, 12 clear of the hosts. Real Sociedad play away to Lillestrom in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, while Malaga travel to Alaves in La Liga on Friday.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, in the 59th and 67th minutes, and earned the highest rating of any player on the pitch at 8.91. Pablo Martínez was Malaga's best, with a goal and an assist.
Real Sociedad had 21 shots to Malaga's 17, a closer count than the 5-2 scoreline suggested.

Sirius · Why these numbers
Before kick-off Sirius gave Malaga 34%, the draw 28%, Real Sociedad 38%. It finished Malaga 2–5 Real Sociedad.
Real Sociedad's stronger rating gives them a slight lean — Real Sociedad sit 127 points higher on our strength rating, 1694 to 1567, which edges them in front at 38%, though strong home advantage across La Liga pulls back towards Malaga on 34%. The draw starts at the usual 27.6% for a gap this size, and both sides' recent games averaging 2.6 goals nudge it up to 28%.
Why Real Sociedad at 38%?
Real Sociedad sit 127 points higher on our strength rating — 1694 to 1567. Sides with a 80–160-point rating edge on the road won 39.9% of 13,861 such games. The 300 most similar past games finished 28–28–44.
Why only 38%?
La Liga home sides out-perform the global norm — and the difference mostly flows to away wins (28.3% vs 30.0%). La Liga homes won 46.6% of 6,163 games vs 44.6% across all 101,389 — outside the noise band, so the tally moves accordingly.
Why the draw at 28%?
With a rating gap this size the draw starts at 27.6%. These teams' recent games average 2.6 goals — a typical goals environment. Games in that environment drew 26.5% of 28,356. The goals environment adds 1.2 points to the draw.
What did we measure but not count?
Malaga are newly promoted — game 9 of their first ten at this level, where our rating knows them least. Promoted sides are said to struggle, but our rating already carries most of it: across 3,012 first-ten games since 2016 they won 26.8% where the rating expected 28.1% — inside the noise band, below it in six of the ten full seasons we hold and about level last season. Out: Diego Murillo, an important player. This does not change our forecast yet: we are still measuring how much missing players like these cost a team. The other measured facts on this page scored nothing either.
