Overview

Palmeiras in brief

Palmeiras were founded in Sao Paulo on 26 August 1914 as Palestra Italia by Italian immigrants. In 1942, during the Second World War and under pressure from the Vargas government after Brazil joined the Allies, the club became Palmeiras; its first match under the new name, a win over Sao Paulo, is remembered as the Arrancada Heroica. Green and white give the nickname Verdao. The old Palestra Italia ground was replaced by an arena that opened in November 2014 as Allianz Parque and was renamed Nubank Parque in 2026.

By the end of 2025 Palmeiras held a record 12 Brazilian titles under the CBF count, which includes the Taca Brasil of 1960 and 1967 and the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa of 1967 and 1969 alongside league wins in 1972, 1973, 1993, 1994, 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2023. They won the Copa do Brasil in 1998, 2012, 2015 and 2020 and the Copa Libertadores in 1999, 2020 and 2021, as well as the 1951 Copa Rio, beating Juventus in the final. In 2025 they were league runners-up and lost the Libertadores final 1-0 to Flamengo in Lima.
